Produced during the 1970s, the Seiko 6138 UFO Chronograph timepiece features a large, rounded case with no protruding lugs and a distinctly race-inspired aesthetic. Also known as the “big eye, small eye” for its two asymmetric sub-dials at the 12 and 6 o’clock positions, the 6138 is a favorite among vintage Seiko collectors.

  • The History:

Seiko began its rich history in 1881 when Kintaro Hattori opened a shop repairing and selling watches in central Tokyo.  Eleven years later, he opened a factory called the Seikosha Factory and began building wall clocks and pocket watches.  After an earthquake and fire destroyed the original factory, Hattori reopened with a new vision, which began what we know as Seiko today.  A true pioneer in watchmaking, Seiko developed the first Japanese-made divers watch.

  • The Watch:

The Seiko UFO Chronograph Ref 6138-0017 features a 44mm stainless steel case with a hardlex crystal and a fixed bezel with a black insert with a tachymeter scale with a red track.  The black dial features two silver sub-dials at the 12 and 6 o’clock positions and a day and date window at the 3 o’clock position.  The chronograph automatic 6138B movement powers the Seiko UFO.

  • The Details:

This Seiko UFO Chronograph Ref 6138-0017 dates to the production period of November 1972 and includes an aftermarket Hodinkee black leather strap with a stainless steel buckle.  The wear present on this timepiece is visible in the photographs and consistent with the age of this watch.
