The Limited Edition Seiko Prospex 1968 Heritage Diver Ref SLA055 was developed in tribute to Seiko’s long-standing relationship with the Japanese Antarctic Research Expedition.  With production limited to 1300 numbered pieces, the SLA055 shares a similar case design to its 1968 predecessor, with sharp, angular lines and the crown seated at the 4 o’clock position and features a Caliber 8L35 automatic movement, which is built in Seiko’s exclusive Shizukuishi Watch Studio, where all Grand Seiko movements are built.

The History:

Seiko began its rich history in 1881 when Kintaro Hattori opened a shop repairing and selling watches in central Tokyo.  Eleven years later, he opened a factory called the Seikosha Factory and began building wall
clocks and pocket watches.  After an earthquake and fire destroyed the original factory, Hattori reopened with a new vision, which began what we know as Seiko today.  A true pioneer in watchmaking, Seiko developed the first Japanese-made divers watch.

The Watch:

The Seiko Prospex 1968 Heritage Diver Ref SLA055 features a 42.6mm stainless steel zaratsu-polished case with a sapphire crystal and a black unidirectional bezel with a diving scale, with markings done in a pale ice blue colored LumiBrite lume.  The blue graduated dial was designed to symbolize the endangered polar ice sheets and features LumiBrite lumed hour, minute, and seconds hands, lumed hour markers, and a date window between the 4 and 5 o’clock positions.  Powered by a Caliber 8L35 automatic movement, the SLA055 has a 50-hour power reserve and a water resistance rating of 200 meters.
