Description

The Zenith De Luca El Primero Chronograph stands out not just for its craftsmanship, but as a piece of horological history. The El Primero Chronograph movement was one of the first fully automatic movements to come to the market in 1969. The El Primero was clearly a step ahead of the competition with its high-frequency beat rate, longer power reserve, and 3 sub-dial configurations on the dial.

The History:

If not for the foresight of Charles Vermot, there would be no modern Zenith El Primero movements today. The company was sold and made the move to manufacturing quartz-based movement timepieces. After being ordered to sell the metal materials, including the dies, machining tools & presses, Vermot chose to hide everything needed to restart production on the El Primero movement inside the factory in a loft area. When Zenith was approached by Rolex, years later, to produce a mechanical automatic chronograph movement for their Daytona model, Vermot had everything needed to begin production. Shortly after, Zenith began production again of its own mechanical watches using this magnificent movement.

The Watch:

The Zenith De Luca El Primero Chronograph has a stainless steel case, which houses its impressive El Primero movement. It has a black dial with three panda style white sub-dials as well as a date window at the 4:30 position. The dot hour markers and Mercedes style hands have a slight patina.

The Details:

This Zenith De Luca El Primero Chronograph is in very good condition. The case and case back have slight wear marks, and the case back etching of the Zenith logo is still visible. The crystal is in good condition as is the stainless steel bracelet. This is a two year only version that was only sold in Italy. It comes with the owner’s manual.
