Description

The Yema Yachtingraf Ref 9312 was introduced in 1966 for regatta racing. With its distinct two-register dial configuration that features one sub-dial with a red, white, and blue countdown timer to track the 5-minute countdown to the race start, the Yachtingraf became the official timepiece worn by the French National Sailing Team.

The History:

Founded in 1948 by Henry Louis Belmont in Besançon, France, Yema began production of their first professional watch, the Superman, in 1963. Considered indestructible by the French Military, the watch was chosen as the timepiece to be worn by French Air Force Pilots. Later innovative timepieces were produced, including the Yachtingraf and Rallygraf, the latter worn by Formula 1 driver Mario Andretti. Yema quickly grew to be the largest exporter of French watches, with more than a half-million timepieces sold in over 50 countries, by 1968.

The Watch:

The Yema Yachtingraf Ref 9312 features a 39 mm stainless steel case with a Plexiglas crystal. Powered by a Valjoux Calibre 7733 manual-wind movement, the Yachtingraf features a small seconds sub-dial, as well as a countdown sub-dial to track the 5 minute countdown time to the start of a regatta race.

The Details:

This Yema Yachtingraf Ref 9312 is in good condition, given the age of this timepiece. Dating to a production year range from 1966-1967, this timepiece features the Valjoux manual-wind 7733 movement. The case shows some wear, consistent with the age of this timepiece. The bezel insert is in very good condition, and the crystal is scratch-free. The tritium lume plots have developed a patina, as has the lume on the hour and minute hands. The engravings on the casebook are still present, and the chronograph functions are working. Included is a Yema stainless steel bracelet with a folding clasp.
