1998 was a transitional period for the Rolex Explorer II models, in that Rolex, was beginning the conversion from radioactive tritium for lume, to light-powered phosphorescent Luminova. With a limited number of dials remaining with the Swiss T<25 markings, that had yet to make it to the production line, Rolex used these dials in the earliest Explorer II’s in 1998 and applied Luminova for lume. These became known as the “Tuminova Dials”, and were only produced for the first few months of 1998.

The History:

The Rolex brand needs no introduction. Founded in 1905 by Hans Wilsdorf and his brother-in-law, Alfred Davis, these visionary men set out to do what had not been successfully and reliably done before. Build a timepiece to be worn on the wrist, that was both highly reliable, functional, and durable, as well as stylish. Wilsdorf’s dream was to create a watch that could accompany its owner through all facets of life and withstand any environment. His innovative approach and high standards for quality re-shaped the watch industry as a whole. It has made the Rolex name synonymous with quality, innovation, and elegance.

The Watch:

The Rolex Explorer II is stylish, with its 39 mm case, glossy white dial, and brushed stainless steel bezel. The case is polished stainless steel and the lugs are brushed stainless steel. The markers, indexes, and Mercedes-style hands are white gold, that is painted black to allow for better legibility. In 1998, Rolex produced a limited amount of pieces with the <T-Swiss Tritium dials, which were lumed with Luminova. These dials, produced for only the first part of 1998, have come to be known as the “Tuminova” Dial. Reference 16570 has the in-house Caliber 3185 movement. It also comes with the 78790 Stainless Steel Bracelet, original to the watch.

The Details:

This Rolex Explorer II is in good condition, unpolished, and with chamfers still present, as shown in the photographs. There are some scratches and nicks on the case and lugs, which are consistent with the age of this timepiece. This watch has had a recent service and is functioning properly. Included with this set are the original boxes, warranty certificate, serial number and chronometer hang tags, factory Rolex case back sticker, factory service booklet, manuals, and certificate holder.
